When the first shower is hot and the second turns lukewarm, the water heater may be doing exactly what its tank size and recovery rate allow—or it may have lost usable capacity. The quickest way to tell is to compare today's hot-water pattern with what the same home and heater used to provide. Do not start by turning the thermostat higher. That can increase scald risk while leaving the real capacity or heating problem untouched.

Opening electrical element compartments, working on gas controls, changing venting, or bypassing safety devices can create shock, fire, combustion, or carbon-monoxide hazards. Limit basic troubleshooting to external observations and the owner's manual unless you are qualified for the service involved.
Do not use a hotter tank setting as a casual capacity booster
Higher stored-water temperature can make a tank's mixed hot water last longer, but it also increases scald risk and may require properly designed mixing or anti-scald controls. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises lowering residential water heaters to about 120°F to reduce tap-water scald injuries, and the U.S. Department of Energy also describes 120°F as a common residential setting.
If the heater is already near that range, do not raise it simply because a family schedule changed. A plumber can help compare tank size, recovery rate, fixture flow, demand timing, and whether a code-compliant mixing strategy or a different water-heating system is appropriate.
A sudden change plus leakage, combustion symptoms, or electrical trouble needs prompt service
Water around the base of a tank, a relief valve that repeatedly discharges, scorching, breaker trips, gas odor, soot, venting damage, or combustion alarms are not normal 'low capacity' symptoms. Stop using the heater as appropriate for the hazard and contact the utility, emergency service, plumber, or qualified technician according to local guidance.
For renters, report hot-water capacity changes with a simple log: time of day, number of showers, whether other appliances were running, how long recovery took, and any visible error code or leak. That gives maintenance staff much better information than simply saying the water is not hot enough.
