A few quiet expansion sounds are different from a water heater that rumbles like a coffee pot full of gravel every time it heats. Flushing is maintenance, but it is not a zero-risk DIY task

Some noises point away from ordinary sediment
Rheem advises that loud repeated banging or rumbling, persistent screeching, hissing or sizzling, and visible leaks deserve closer attention. Sizzling near an electric access area can mean water is contacting hot components; combustion or venting symptoms on a gas heater require professional evaluation. A leaking tank is not repaired by flushing sediment.
If you smell gas, leave the area and follow your gas utility's emergency instructions from a safe location. If a carbon-monoxide alarm activates, follow the alarm and local emergency guidance rather than staying near the heater to troubleshoot. When replacement is on the table, match capacity and fuel before shopping by price
If the tank is leaking, badly corroded, near the end of its expected service life, or continuing to perform poorly after appropriate maintenance, replacement may be more reasonable than repeated service. Compare fuel type, tank capacity or first-hour rating, physical dimensions, venting or electrical requirements, drain-pan and expansion requirements, efficiency rating, warranty, and local permit needs.
Switching from a tank to a tankless system is not a simple like-for-like swap. Gas supply, venting, electrical service, condensate drainage, and flow demand can all change. Have the installation requirements evaluated before buying a unit based only on advertised gallons per minute or efficiency.
