A shower that suddenly feels weak does not tell you where the restriction is. The fastest way to narrow it down is to compare hot and cold flow, test other fixtures, and decide whether the problem begins at the showerhead or farther upstream. That sequence is especially useful in apartments and rentals, where a building pressure change or maintenance shutdown can look like a bad showerhead from inside one bathroom.

Check these safety points before you start.
- Do not remove shower valve trim or cartridges unless the water can be safely shut off and you have the exact model procedure.
- Do not modify or remove a showerhead flow-control device; replacement products must meet applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
- If low pressure is accompanied by a leak, wall moisture, discolored water, or a sudden whole-home pressure loss, stop troubleshooting the showerhead and investigate the plumbing supply.
Use the rest of the house as your first diagnostic tool
Run the bathroom sink and, if practical, another faucet at roughly the same time you test the shower. If every fixture is weak, the cause may be a building supply issue, a main shutoff that is not fully open, a pressure-reducing valve problem, municipal work, a well-system issue, or heavy simultaneous demand. In a multifamily building, ask whether neighbors or property management are seeing the same change before you disassemble anything.
If the sink and other fixtures are normal but the shower is weak, the restriction is more likely to be in the showerhead, its inlet screen, the shower valve/cartridge, or a local supply path. Also compare hot and cold. Weak flow on only one temperature side can point to a different valve or supply problem than weak flow on both.

Follow the showerhead’s care instructions, because finishes and internal flow controls can be damaged by strong acids, abrasives, or tools used in the wrong place.
If your model allows the showerhead to be removed, shut the shower off and protect the finish while you inspect the inlet. Do not drill out, discard, or modify a flow-control device. Federal showerhead rules and state requirements can affect allowable flow, and WaterSense-labeled showerheads are designed to use no more than 2.0 gallons per minute while meeting performance criteria.
Good flow at the shower arm but poor flow through the head points to the head
Some manufacturer troubleshooting procedures use a brief flow check with the showerhead removed to separate a clogged head from a valve problem. This should be done only if the model and plumbing arrangement make the showerhead easy to remove without damaging the arm or finish. Keep the opening aimed safely into the tub or shower and avoid spraying the wall cavity.
If flow is strong from the shower arm and drops only when the showerhead is installed, cleaning or replacing the head is reasonable. If flow is weak even with the head removed, the issue is upstream and repeated showerhead cleaning will not solve it.
Valve and supply work is where DIY should stop for many households
Pressure-balance and thermostatic shower valves contain cartridges, stops, seals, and model-specific parts. A cartridge can cause low flow, but replacing one may require shutting off water, removing trim without damaging waterproofing, and identifying the exact valve body. If you cannot positively identify the valve or isolate the water, a plumber is the safer next step.
Renters should document the low-flow pattern and report it before removing valve trim or changing permanent plumbing. Call promptly if low pressure arrives with brown water, leaking inside the wall, hammering, a sudden pressure loss across the whole home, or signs that a pipe or supply line has failed.
Before you call it done
- Other fixtures were compared so a shower-only problem is not confused with a whole-home pressure issue.
- Hot and cold flow were compared before blaming the showerhead.
- Only manufacturer-approved cleaning was used on spray holes, screens, and finishes.
- No flow-control device was drilled, removed, or altered to chase higher flow.
- Valve, cartridge, hidden-leak, or building-supply problems are being escalated when the showerhead is not the restriction.
