A modern refrigerator may run much longer than an older model without actually being broken. Variable-speed compressors, hot kitchens, a recent grocery load, and frequent door openings can all stretch run time. The useful question is not simply whether you can hear the refrigerator running—it is whether temperatures are stable, the doors seal, airflow is open, and the unit ever reaches a normal steady state.

Start with temperature, not compressor sound
Before diagnosing run time, place an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator compartment and another in the freezer if you have them. A refrigerator that runs for long stretches but keeps food at safe, stable temperatures is a different problem from one that runs continuously while the fresh-food section warms or the freezer softens.
GE Appliances notes that long run times can be normal during warm weather, after large amounts of food are added, or when doors are opened often. Newer high-efficiency refrigerators may also use longer, quieter cycles than older models. Give the appliance time to recover after a grocery load or long door opening before deciding that the cycle itself is abnormal.

Clean a removable dirt film with the method allowed by the refrigerator manual and confirm shelves, bins, and containers are fully seated. Do not stretch a gasket aggressively or heat it with a hair dryer unless the manufacturer specifically provides that procedure for your model. A torn or permanently deformed seal usually needs the correct replacement part.
Airflow problems can be inside or outside the cabinet
Inside the refrigerator, tightly packed food can block supply or return vents and create uneven temperatures that keep controls calling for more cooling. Leave the air passages identified in the manual open instead of pushing containers against every rear or side wall.
Outside the cabinet, condenser maintenance depends on the model. GE notes that dirty condenser coils can reduce efficiency on models with serviceable coils, while many newer designs use condensers that are not intended for routine owner cleaning. Check the owner’s manual before removing a grille or using a vacuum near components, and unplug the refrigerator before any manufacturer-approved maintenance.
The room around the refrigerator matters too
A refrigerator in a very hot garage, next to a range, in direct sun, or squeezed into a cabinet opening with inadequate clearance may run longer because it has more heat to reject. Compare the installation clearances and ambient-temperature limits in the appliance manual rather than assuming every refrigerator is designed for an unconditioned garage.
If the unit was recently moved, also confirm it is level enough for the doors to close as designed and that the power cord and water line are not preventing it from sitting in its intended position. Do not block ventilation openings with storage boxes or decorative panels.
Call for service when long run time comes with cooling or electrical symptoms
A refrigerator that runs nearly all the time and still cannot hold temperature may have a fan, sensor, defrost, sealed-system, refrigerant, or compressor problem that is not an owner-maintenance task. Repeated clicking with failed starts, a hot electrical smell, a tripping breaker, or visible wiring damage also deserves prompt service rather than repeated unplug-and-retry cycles.
If food temperatures have risen into an unsafe range, handle the food-safety question separately from the appliance repair. A service appointment can fix the refrigerator later, but it cannot make temperature-abused perishable food safe again.
