When a refrigerator door will close only if you push it hard—or opens again after you walk away—the seal is not automatically the first part to replace. In many U.S. kitchens, a pizza box, produce drawer, gallon jug, ice bin, or overloaded door shelf is enough to hold the door a fraction of an inch open. Start by proving that the door can reach the cabinet freely, then look at leveling and the gasket before moving into hinge or service work.

Start with anything that physically keeps the door from reaching the cabinet
Open the refrigerator and look along the full path of the door rather than only at the gasket. A tall container can lean out from a shelf, a crisper drawer can sit slightly forward, a door bin can be packed so tightly that a bottle shifts, and a freezer ice cube or package can keep a second door from closing. GE Appliances specifically lists blocked food, bins that are not fully closed, and heavy door items as common reasons a refrigerator door will not close.
Remove or reposition anything that touches the door, mullion, drawer, or opposite door. Then close the door gently several times. If it now reaches the cabinet without extra force, the fix was storage layout rather than a seal or hinge. Do not keep slamming the door to overcome an obstruction; that can move shelves, damage bins, and still leave a small air gap.

Leveling can decide whether the door naturally swings shut or drifts open
Many freestanding refrigerators are designed with the front slightly higher than the back so the doors close easily from a partly open position. If the refrigerator was recently moved for cleaning, delivered, or installed on uneven flooring, that relationship can change. A door that stays open at a shallow angle on an otherwise clear refrigerator is a reason to check the model’s leveling instructions.
Do not copy a generic number of turns from another refrigerator. Roller and leveling-leg designs vary, and built-in models may use a different installation method. Use the owner’s or installation manual for your exact model, keep the cabinet stable on the floor, and recheck door alignment after each small adjustment. Renters should report a recently installed appliance that is visibly tilted or unstable instead of improvising shims that property management did not approve.
A gasket needs clean, even contact—not automatic replacement
With the door closed, look for a section of gasket that is folded, dirty, pulled out of its retaining groove, or obviously not touching the cabinet. Wipe food residue from the gasket and mating surface with the cleaning method approved by the refrigerator manufacturer, then dry both surfaces. Sticky syrup and crumbs can keep a magnetic gasket from sitting flat just as easily as age can.
If the gasket has a removable or press-in design, follow the model instructions before pushing it back into place or ordering a new one. A torn gasket, hard section, permanent deformation, or gap that remains after the cabinet is correctly leveled may justify replacement. Order by the exact model number because door size, corner shape, magnetic strip, and attachment style are not universal.
Know when the problem has moved beyond a storage or gasket check
Service is the better next step if the hinge is visibly bent, the door has dropped, the cabinet twists on the floor, the door rubs the liner, or the seal gap cannot be corrected with model-approved leveling and gasket adjustment. A broken hinge or damaged door structure is not a good place to keep adding washers or forcing alignment.
Until the door is fixed, minimize the time it sits open and verify refrigerator temperatures with an appliance thermometer if food safety is a concern. Repeated condensation, frost, or unusually long compressor run time can be a clue that warm room air is entering through the gap.
