An outdoor faucet can leak from the spout, the hose connection, a vacuum breaker, the wall, or the stem behind the handle. Those locations do not share one repair. If water appears only around the handle while the faucet is open, stem packing or a seal is a stronger clue than a dripping washer at the spout. Start by drying the faucet and watching exactly where the first drop appears.

Check these safety points before you start.
- Shut off the branch water supply and arrange plumbing repair if water is entering the wall, the faucet body appears split, or the leak followed a freeze.
- Do not remove or permanently defeat an anti-siphon or vacuum-breaker device just to stop leakage.
- Avoid forcing corroded packing nuts or faucet bodies; twisting the exterior fitting can damage piping or a hidden connection inside the wall.
Dry the faucet and watch for the first wet point
Remove the hose, wipe the faucet body dry, and briefly turn the water on while standing where you can see the stem, handle, vacuum breaker, spout, and wall penetration. A leak that begins around the stem only while water is flowing often involves packing or a stem seal. A faucet that drips from the spout while fully off points to a different sealing surface.
Water from the anti-siphon or vacuum-breaker area also needs to be separated from a handle leak. Some frost-proof hydrants include pressure-relief or backflow hardware near the top of the faucet, and the repair parts are model-specific.

A packing nut can be adjustable on some models—but not all of them
Traditional sillcocks and some frost-free faucets use packing around the stem. Woodford repair instructions for certain models, for example, say a packing-nut-area leak may be corrected by lightly tightening the packing nut. Other designs use O-rings, cartridges, or stem assemblies without the same adjustment.
That is why “tighten the nut” is not a universal answer. Over-tightening can make the handle hard to turn, damage packing, or crack aging hardware. Follow the exact manufacturer procedure and make only the specified adjustment.
Frost-free faucets add length, drainage, and freeze-protection details
A frost-free sillcock closes water farther inside the heated wall and is designed to drain the exposed barrel when installed correctly and when the hose is removed. Leaving a hose or closed accessory attached in freezing weather can trap water and defeat that drainage function on many designs.
If water appears from inside the wall, the faucet body is split, or the leak began after a freeze, shut off the branch supply if you can do so safely and arrange plumbing repair. An in-wall rupture can leak only when the faucet is opened, which can mimic a harmless handle leak from outside.
Vacuum-breaker leakage is a different repair path
Many modern outdoor faucets include anti-siphon or vacuum-breaker hardware to reduce backflow risk. Arrowhead and Woodford both publish model-specific vacuum-breaker parts and repair information. Water spraying or dripping from that device should not be diagnosed as stem packing just because it is close to the handle.
Do not remove a backflow device simply to stop a nuisance leak. Identify the faucet, use the approved repair assembly, and preserve the backflow protection required for the installation.
Buy the repair kit only after you identify the faucet
Outdoor faucets that look similar can use different stem lengths, washers, O-rings, vacuum breakers, packing, and handle hardware. Frost-free models are especially sensitive to stem length and internal design because the shutoff seat is located inside the wall.
Before buying parts, record the manufacturer, model or series, wall-faucet type, stem length if the manufacturer requires it, and exact leak location. If the faucet body must be removed from piping or the in-wall connection is leaking, a plumber is the safer choice because hidden joints and freeze damage can turn a small exterior leak into wall damage.
