If the kitchen sink suddenly fills with cloudy water when the dishwasher pumps out, the dishwasher may be doing exactly what it is supposed to do: pushing several gallons of wastewater into a drain path that cannot carry it away fast enough. Before running another full cycle, fill the sink only partway and watch how quickly it drains. If the sink itself is slow, gurgles, or backs up in the second bowl, treat the sink drain as part of the problem rather than focusing only on the appliance.
Use the visible plumbing layout to narrow the problem
Look under the sink with a flashlight. Identify the dishwasher drain hose, where it connects, whether there is a garbage disposal, and whether the hose rises high under the counter before dropping to the connection. Whirlpool describes this high loop as a way to reduce dirty sink water flowing back toward the dishwasher; some installations use an air gap instead, depending on the appliance instructions and local requirements.

A garbage disposal changes the diagnostic order

Chemical drain cleaner is a poor first response around appliance plumbing
Caustic drain opener can remain in a trap, disposal, air gap, or hose and expose the next person who disconnects the plumbing. It can also complicate service if the restriction turns out to be mechanical. Use a removable strainer, trap service, approved mechanical cleaning, or a plumber as appropriate for the drain design instead of mixing chemicals into a system connected to an appliance.
If more than the kitchen sink is gurgling or backing up, or wastewater appears in another fixture, the restriction may be farther down the branch or building drain. Stop adding water and escalate the plumbing issue rather than continuing dishwasher cycles.
After the drain is open, verify that dirty water cannot return to the dishwasher
Once the sink drains normally, confirm the dishwasher hose routing still matches the installation instructions and that the connection is secure. Whirlpool specifically notes that a high loop or working air gap helps prevent wastewater from flowing back into the dishwasher.
Run a short rinse or drain cycle while watching the sink and connections. The sink should carry the discharge away without rising significantly, and no hose joint should leak. If the sink stays clear but the dishwasher still will not drain, then the appliance pump, filter, check valve, or internal drain system deserves a separate diagnosis.
