That does not mean every white speck in a room comes from the humidifier. Compare the timing and location. Dust that appears quickly after the humidifier runs, is heaviest near the unit, and decreases when the unit is off strongly suggests the water source is involved.

Distilled water is different from spring, mineral, and some purified water

Bottled water labeled spring, artesian, or mineral is not intended to be demineralized, and a bottle labeled purified can be produced by several different processes.
A demineralization cartridge can help when the humidifier manufacturer supports one, but cartridge performance and life vary. If white dust returns before the advertised service interval, local water hardness and actual use may be exhausting the cartridge sooner than expected.
White dust is also a reminder to clean the water-contact surfaces
Mineral scale inside the tank or base can give microorganisms more surface on which to grow. EPA consumer guidance recommends emptying and drying portable humidifier tanks daily, cleaning portable units regularly, and following the manufacturer's directions for cleaning products and disinfectants. The goal is not to make the tank smell strongly of cleaner; any cleaning chemical has to be rinsed away so it is not dispersed during operation.
Do not add essential oils, fragrance, bleach, or household disinfectant to the water unless the humidifier manufacturer explicitly says that product and reservoir are designed for it. Oils can damage plastics or misting components, while leftover cleaning chemical can become part of what the humidifier sends into the room.
More humidity is not always better in a dry-feeling room
EPA recommends not humidifying indoor air above 50% relative humidity. If windows, walls, or nearby fabrics become damp, lower the humidistat, reduce run time, or move the unit so moisture does not collect on surfaces. A separate hygrometer is useful when the humidifier's built-in sensor is close to the mist plume and may not represent the whole room.
If you are choosing a replacement humidifier mainly because of mineral dust, compare humidification type, room-size rating, tank-cleaning access, whether a demineralization cartridge is supported, replacement-filter cost, automatic humidity control, and how easily all wet surfaces can dry. A different mist technology may reduce mineral dispersion, but every water-holding humidifier still needs routine maintenance.
