Seeing AUX HEAT on a thermostat can make it look as if the heat pump has failed, but auxiliary heat is a designed backup stage on many U.S. systems. It may come on when outdoor conditions are cold, when the thermostat is trying to recover several degrees quickly, or during certain defrost conditions. The concern is persistent or unexpected auxiliary heat—not the label by itself.

A thermostat may bring on AUX heat when the indoor temperature falls a few degrees below setpoint, during colder outdoor weather, or as part of system logic. That means the first useful data points are outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, setpoint, and how long the call has lasted.

Know the difference between AUX heat and EMERGENCY HEAT
Auxiliary heat is normally called automatically by the controls. Emergency Heat is a user-selected mode on many thermostats that intentionally stops relying on the outdoor heat-pump section and uses the backup source instead. Carrier advises using emergency heat sparingly because electric-resistance backup can be significantly more expensive to operate.
Do not select Emergency Heat simply because you see frost during a normal defrost cycle. If the outdoor unit is heavily iced, damaged, or not operating and the home is losing temperature, emergency heat may be a temporary bridge while you arrange service—but it is not the repair.
Persistent AUX in mild weather points to performance or control problems
If AUX stays on for long periods when outdoor conditions are mild, the setpoint is stable, and the home still struggles to warm, something may be limiting primary heat-pump capacity. A clogged filter or blocked airflow is one homeowner-level possibility; thermostat configuration, outdoor-unit faults, refrigerant problems, sensors, controls, or equipment sizing require professional diagnosis.
Compare electric use only after you understand the weather. A cold snap naturally increases heating demand, while a sudden unexplained utility spike in moderate weather can support the case for an HVAC inspection.
Thermostat replacement must preserve heat-pump staging logic
If AUX behavior changed after installing a smart thermostat, verify that the thermostat is explicitly compatible with your heat pump, number of stages, and backup heat type. Incorrect equipment configuration can produce poor staging, excessive backup-heat operation, or no backup when it is needed.
Do not move thermostat wires, jump terminals, or change installer-level balance settings unless you have the correct equipment documentation and are qualified to do so. A technician can verify the wiring, staging, lockouts, sensors, and switchover logic together.

- Outdoor temperature, room temperature, setpoint, and AUX duration were recorded before judging the behavior.
