A supply register that feels cool does not always mean a gas furnace failed. The blower can run before the burners fully heat the exchanger, after the burners shut off, or continuously when the thermostat fan is set to On. But if the house is losing temperature or the furnace repeatedly blows room-temperature air without a normal heat cycle, you need to separate simple controls and airflow from combustion problems that require qualified service.

Check these safety points before you start.
- Do not open burner compartments, adjust gas valves, defeat furnace door switches, or bypass limit, pressure, flame, or other safety controls.
- If you smell or hear leaking gas, leave immediately and contact the gas utility or emergency authority from outside without operating electrical switches on the way out.
- If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds or CO exposure is suspected, get to fresh air and seek emergency help; carbon monoxide itself has no smell.
Watch one full call for heat before deciding the furnace is blowing cold
Set the thermostat to Heat and raise the setpoint a few degrees above room temperature. Then listen and observe from normal living areas and the user-accessible furnace exterior. Many furnaces delay the indoor blower until the heat exchanger warms, and may keep the blower running briefly after the burners shut off to move remaining heat into the house.
Carrier identifies a thermostat fan setting of On instead of Auto as a common reason homeowners feel cool or room-temperature air between heating cycles. In Auto, the blower normally follows heating calls; in On, it can circulate air even when the burners are off.
- Confirm the thermostat is in Heat mode and the setpoint is above the current room temperature.

Restricted airflow can make a furnace protect itself
A badly clogged filter or blocked airflow path can cause excessive furnace temperature. Carrier notes that restricted airflow can lead to overheating and a safety limit shutting the heating portion down while the blower continues moving air. That can feel like the furnace suddenly switched from warm air to cool air.
Replacing an owner-serviceable filter and opening normal registers is reasonable. Resetting or bypassing a limit switch is not. If heat repeatedly starts and then stops while the blower keeps running, the safety control may be reporting a real airflow, blower, heat-exchanger, or combustion problem.
Gas odor and carbon-monoxide alarms override normal troubleshooting
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so you cannot judge furnace safety by smell alone. CPSC and CDC identify malfunctioning or improperly vented fuel-burning furnaces as potential CO sources and recommend working CO alarms and qualified servicing of fuel-burning heating equipment.
If a CO alarm sounds or people develop headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, or other possible CO symptoms, get outside to fresh air and follow emergency guidance. If you smell or hear leaking gas, CPSC advises leaving the home immediately and contacting the gas utility or emergency authority from outside; do not operate lights, switches, or phones before leaving.
Leave ignition, flame, venting, and gas-valve diagnosis closed
A dirty flame sensor, failed igniter, pressure-switch fault, vent blockage, gas-supply issue, blower problem, or control-board fault can all interrupt heat on some furnaces. Those components are inside a combustion and electrical system that should not be opened simply because the vents feel cool.
Do not tape down door interlocks, jumper pressure or limit switches, adjust gas pressure, clean burners with the furnace energized, or attempt to defeat lockout codes. Record any user-visible diagnostic code and the furnace model number, then give that information to an HVAC technician.
A cold house needs a backup plan that does not create another hazard
If the furnace cannot maintain safe indoor temperature during freezing weather, protect people and plumbing while service is arranged. Use only listed portable heaters exactly as their instructions require, plugged directly into appropriate wall outlets and kept away from combustibles; never use a gas oven or range to heat the home.
Renters should notify property management promptly when the primary heat fails. Homeowners should also make sure exterior combustion vents are not blocked by snow or debris where they can be inspected safely from the ground, and keep annual professional furnace maintenance on the schedule.

- Thermostat mode, setpoint, and Fan Auto/On behavior were checked during a complete heating call.
- The correct user-serviceable air filter and obvious supply/return obstructions were checked without opening combustion panels.
- Repeated heat shutdown with blower-only operation is being treated as a safety or service symptom, not a switch to bypass.
- Working carbon-monoxide alarms are part of the home’s heating safety plan.
- Gas odor, a CO alarm, or possible CO symptoms trigger evacuation/emergency guidance instead of continued furnace troubleshooting.
