A puddle under the kitchen sink can make the garbage disposal look guilty even when the leak starts above or beside it. Water can travel down the disposal housing from the sink flange, run along the dishwasher hose, or drip from the discharge connection and appear at the bottom. Before tightening every fitting, disconnect power, dry the cabinet, and reproduce the leak in stages so you know which joint is actually wet first.

The highest wet point is usually more useful than the puddle location

A discharge or dishwasher-hose leak is different from a leak through the disposal body

These are plumbing-interface leaks, so the correct fix depends on the exact gasket, hose, elbow, and mounting design for the model.
If water is truly emerging through the disposal housing, motor joint, or bottom after you have ruled out water running down from above, treat that as an appliance failure rather than trying to smear sealant over the outside. The manufacturer directs users with confirmed body or motor-joint leaks toward further service assistance.
Do not tighten a wet joint blindly
Overtightening plastic drain fittings, dishwasher adapters, or mounting hardware can crack parts, distort gaskets, or create a second leak. Identify the model and connection type, then follow the manufacturer's installation instructions for the specific joint. If the disposal was recently installed, a mounting or gasket issue may need correction rather than more torque.
Also check nearby sources that can impersonate a disposal leak: pullout-faucet hoses, supply shutoff valves, water filters, soap dispensers, countertop seams, and the dishwasher drain hose. A slow faucet leak can travel across the sink bottom and drip beside the disposal long after the faucet is turned off.
Protect the cabinet and know when the leak is no longer a small DIY problem
Dry the cabinet promptly and remove soaked paper or stored items so a small plumbing leak does not become a cabinet-floor or wall problem. Renters should photograph the dry connections and the first point where water reappears, then report the leak instead of removing a hardwired disposal or permanent drain assembly.
Arrange qualified plumbing or appliance service if the leak is inside the disposal body, wiring or the electrical connection has been wet, the mounting assembly is loose and the unit is heavy to support, or the source remains uncertain. Replacement selection should match the sink mount, discharge height, dishwasher connection, cabinet clearance, feed type, and electrical connection rather than horsepower alone.

- Power to the disposal was disconnected before drying, touching, or inspecting the unit and its connections.
- The cabinet and plumbing were dried first so the highest new wet point could be identified.
