When an automatic garage door reaches partway down and immediately goes back up, the reversal can be the opener doing exactly what it was designed to do. U.S. residential openers use entrapment-protection systems, so the right first move is to inspect the doorway and safety sensors—not to defeat the sensors or turn up the force until the door stays shut.

Check these safety points before you start.

- Do not loosen or adjust torsion springs, extension springs, lift cables, bottom brackets, or other high-tension hardware; these components can cause severe injury.
Watch where the reversal happens before touching a control
A door that reverses almost immediately may be seeing a safety-sensor problem or resistance near the top of travel. A door that reaches the floor and then reopens may have a travel-limit, floor-contact, weather, or mechanical issue. The opener's light flashes or diagnostic LEDs can also narrow the problem on many modern models.
Keep people, pets, bikes, toys, trash cans, extension cords, and vehicles completely out of the opening while you observe one cycle from a safe location. Do not stand under a moving door to watch the bottom seal.
Photo eyes need a clear path and correct alignment
Many U.S. openers use photoelectric safety sensors mounted near the floor on both sides of the opening. Dirt on a lens, a box blocking the beam, a bumped bracket, sunlight conditions, damaged wire, or misalignment can prevent normal closing. Clean accessible lenses with a soft dry cloth and compare the sensor indicator lights with the owner's manual.

Resistance in the door can look like an opener problem
Bent track, ice at the threshold, a damaged roller, a shifted bottom seal, or a door that has become unusually heavy can trigger reversal. If the opener is disconnected according to the owner's manual, a properly maintained door should generally move without binding, but a heavy or falling door is dangerous and may indicate a spring or cable problem.
Garage-door springs, bottom brackets, and lift cables can store substantial energy. Do not loosen, wind, clamp, or replace them as a casual DIY check. If the door is crooked, a cable is frayed or off a drum, a spring is broken, or the door will not stay controlled manually, stop and call a qualified garage-door technician.
Travel and force settings are not the place to start
Openers use model-specific travel and force logic. Increasing closing force to overpower a reversal can mask resistance or compromise safe operation. If the door reaches the floor and reverses with a clear path and normal sensors, use the manufacturer procedure for travel adjustment or have the opener serviced.
After any adjustment that affects travel, force, sensors, or door hardware, perform the safety-reversal tests specified by the opener manufacturer. A door that cannot pass those tests should not remain in automatic service.
Before you call it done
- The doorway and both safety-sensor paths are completely clear.
- Sensor lenses, brackets, indicator lights, and model diagnostic codes were checked before settings were changed.
- The tracks were inspected only from a safe position for visible debris, ice, or damage.
- No one bypassed, relocated, or defeated the photo-eye or reversal system.
- Broken springs, damaged cables, a heavy or crooked door, or failed reversal testing is being handled by a qualified garage-door technician.
