Faucet Flow Dropped After the Water Was Shut Off? Clean the Aerator Before Replacing the Cartridge

Plumbing work or a utility shutoff can loosen sediment that gets caught in a faucet aerator or spray-head screen. Compare other fixtures, clean the outlet screen, and flush only as the faucet manufacturer allows.

If one faucet suddenly has weak, sputtering, or uneven flow right after the water was turned back on, the timing matters. A supply interruption can move small bits of mineral scale, pipe debris, or installation material into the faucet's aerator or spray-head screen. Before replacing a cartridge or blaming whole-house pressure, find out whether the problem is only at that one outlet.

If the shutoff valves under the sink are stuck, leaking, badly corroded, or will not reopen fully, stop forcing them. A fragile old stop valve can begin leaking when disturbed and may need a plumber rather than more torque.

Persistent low flow after cleaning points farther upstream

If the aerator is clean but the faucet remains weak, check for a kinked pull-down hose, a partially closed stop valve, a clogged model-specific inlet screen, or a cartridge problem according to the faucet manual. If multiple fixtures changed at the same time, investigate the home's supply rather than replacing faucet parts one by one.
