Electric Range Burner Not Heating? Check Whether One Element or the Whole Range Lost Heat

One dead electric burner and several burners that will not heat point to different problems. Separate the element, control, receptacle, and 240-volt supply clues without working on live range wiring.

An electric range can still have a working clock or oven light even when a heating circuit has a problem, so “it has power” does not settle the diagnosis. The first useful question is whether one surface element failed or several heating functions stopped together. That split helps you avoid replacing a burner when the real issue is a control, receptacle, breaker, or power-supply problem.

If you need the short version, try these steps first.

  1. Turn every surface control off and let the cooktop cool completely.
  2. Confirm the correct control knob or touch zone is being used for the burner you are testing.
  3. Compare one failed burner with at least one other burner and, if safe, the oven heating function.

Check these safety points before you start.

  • Electric ranges use hazardous line voltage; do not probe the receptacle, terminal block, breaker, or internal wiring unless you are qualified to do so.
  • If a burner will not turn off, disconnect range power and arrange service rather than leaving the appliance energized.
  • Stop using the range if you see arcing, melted insulation, scorching, repeated breaker trips, or smell burning electrical material.

First decide whether the failure is local or range-wide

If only one burner does not heat while the other surface elements and oven still heat normally, the problem is more likely to be local to that element, its receptacle or connection, or its control. If several burners or the oven also lost heat, the incoming power supply or a range-level electrical fault moves higher on the list.

GE Appliances notes that an electric range can have partial voltage: the clock may still work while the burners do not heat properly. That is why a lit display is not proof that the 240-volt heating supply is intact.

  1. Turn every surface control off and let the cooktop cool completely.
  2. Confirm the correct control knob or touch zone is being used for the burner you are testing.
  3. Compare one failed burner with at least one other burner and, if safe, the oven heating function.
  4. Check the home breaker panel for a clearly tripped double-pole range breaker, but do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again.
  5. If heat is missing across several functions, stop at the breaker-level check and arrange qualified electrical or appliance diagnosis.

Coil elements and smooth-top elements need different owner checks

On some removable-coil ranges, the owner manual may allow the cool element to be removed and reseated. GE also describes same-size element swapping as a diagnostic step on certain coil-burner models. Do that only when the model documentation explicitly permits it, the range is de-energized as instructed, and the element is completely cool.

Do not lift a glass cooktop or access a radiant element, wiring, limiter, switch, or receptacle from below as a casual troubleshooting step. Smooth-top heating parts are not equivalent to a plug-in coil and often require disassembly and electrical testing.

A bad connection can be more important than the element itself

A coil that sits loosely, shows pitting at the terminals, arcs, or leaves heat discoloration at the receptacle needs more than a new element. A damaged receptacle or loose connection can overheat and should be evaluated before the range is put back into regular use.

For a smooth-top range, a burner that cycles strangely, never heats, or stays on unexpectedly can involve the element, temperature limiter, control switch, relay, or electronic control. If an element will not turn off, disconnect power to the range rather than relying on the control knob.

Do not troubleshoot a 240-volt supply with a handheld guess

Electric ranges commonly use a 240-volt branch circuit. Testing receptacles, terminal blocks, internal wiring, or breaker output exposes you to hazardous voltage and is not a routine homeowner check. If the breaker is not obviously tripped and multiple heat functions are missing, an electrician or qualified appliance technician should verify the supply.

Repeated breaker trips, a hot or scorched cord connection, buzzing from the receptacle, or a burning-plastic smell are stop-use conditions. Do not keep resetting the breaker to see whether the range will eventually stay on.

Match replacement elements and controls to the exact range model

If the manufacturer confirms a user-replaceable coil element, match wattage, size, terminal style, and the exact model compatibility. Sensi-Temp and conventional coil assemblies are not interchangeable just because their diameter looks similar.

For radiant elements, control switches, receptacles, terminal blocks, or electronic controls, use the model-specific parts diagram and service procedure. The part decision should follow a confirmed diagnosis, not the assumption that every no-heat symptom means a failed element.

Before you call it done

  • You know whether one burner failed or several heating functions failed together.
  • Controls and a clearly tripped double-pole breaker were checked without repeated resets.
  • Any removable-coil inspection follows the exact range manual and is done only when fully cool and de-energized.
  • Scorching, arcing, a hot receptacle, or a breaker that trips again is being treated as a stop-use condition.
  • Replacement elements or controls are being selected by exact model, electrical rating, and manufacturer compatibility.
