When an electric dryer tumbles normally but the clothes stay cold, the motor sound can make the power supply seem fine. Many U.S. electric dryers use a 240-volt circuit, and the drum motor may still run when the part of the supply needed for the heater is interrupted. Before assuming the heating element burned out, check the selected cycle, the breaker correctly, and whether the machine produces any heat during a controlled empty test.

Check these safety points before you start.
- Do not remove the electrical-panel cover or probe a 240-volt dryer receptacle unless you are qualified and equipped for that work.
- Stop using the dryer if the breaker repeatedly trips, the plug or receptacle is hot or discolored, wiring smells burned, or the appliance produces a burning odor.
- Keep the lint screen and exhaust path maintained; restricted airflow can create excessive heat and a dryer-fire hazard even when the original complaint is slow or absent heating.
First prove the dryer is actually calling for heat
Choose a heated timed cycle rather than Air Only, Air Fluff, or another no-heat option. With the drum empty, let the dryer run for about five minutes, then stop it and carefully check whether the inside of the drum feels warmer than room temperature. This separates a settings problem from a true no-heat condition without waiting through a full wet load.
If the dryer does warm up empty but clothes remain wet, the problem is closer to drying performance: an overloaded drum, clothes leaving the washer too wet, a restricted lint screen or vent, or a sensor-cycle issue. That is different from a drum that stays cold during a known heated cycle.

Why both breaker poles matter on a U.S. electric dryer
Whirlpool notes that many electric dryers use a separate 30-amp circuit with two breaker poles. One portion of the supply can leave the motor able to turn while the heater does not receive the voltage it needs. That is why a spinning drum does not prove the entire dryer circuit is healthy.
Use the electrical panel only in the normal consumer manner: identify the labeled dryer breaker and reset the linked breaker once. Do not remove the panel cover, probe receptacle terminals, separate tied breaker handles, or improvise adapters. A breaker that will not stay on, a hot receptacle, discoloration, a loose plug, or a damaged cord needs qualified electrical attention.
Some heat but very slow drying points back toward airflow
If the dryer produces heat but a load takes much longer than it used to, return to the lint screen, flexible transition duct, and outdoor exhaust path. CPSC warns that lint buildup in dryers and exhaust ducts can restrict airflow, raise temperatures, and contribute to fires. Cleaning the lint screen every load is basic maintenance, not just a drying-speed tip.
Do not keep extending the cycle when the cabinet or laundry room becomes unusually hot, the dryer develops a burning smell, or outdoor exhaust is very weak. Internal no-heat repairs are not a live-circuit troubleshooting project
Heating elements, thermal cutoffs, thermostats, terminal blocks, wiring, and control components can all cause a true no-heat condition, but confirming them typically requires opening the appliance and testing electrical parts. A gas dryer uses a completely different burner and gas-supply path, so do not apply electric-dryer instructions to a gas model.
If the dryer is under warranty, use the manufacturer's service process before disassembly. For an older unit, compare repair cost with vent condition, drum capacity, electrical requirements, available space, door swing, and energy features before replacing it. A new dryer still needs a correctly sized circuit and a safe exhaust system.
Before you call it done
- A heated timed cycle was tested with the drum empty so a settings problem was ruled out.
- The linked two-pole dryer breaker was checked as one circuit rather than assuming drum rotation proves full power.
- A breaker that retrips is being treated as a fault, not repeatedly reset.
- If the dryer makes some heat, the lint screen and exhaust airflow are being evaluated separately from a true no-heat condition.
- Internal heating, wiring, terminal-block, or control diagnosis is being left to appropriate appliance or electrical service.
