Dryer Motor Runs but the Drum Won’t Turn? Stop the Cycle Before You Assume It Needs a New Motor

A dryer that sounds like the motor is running while the drum stays still can have a broken belt, seized drum support, idler problem, or another drive fault. Stop repeated starts, confirm the symptom, and keep cabinet work within safe limits.

Hearing a dryer motor without seeing the drum move is useful diagnostic information, but it is not a reason to keep pressing Start. A broken drive belt is common, but a jammed drum, failed idler or roller, motor problem, or load obstruction can create a similar symptom. The safest first job is to confirm what the machine is doing from outside, disconnect power, and decide whether the repair requires opening a cabinet that contains electrical parts, sharp edges, and—in some models—a gas connection.

  1. Remove an overloaded or tightly packed load and check whether clothing is trapped in the door opening.
  2. Make sure the door closes and latches normally and that Control Lock or another control setting is not changing the cycle behavior.
  3. Run only a brief observation test; if the motor sounds active but the drum stays still, stop the dryer.

Check these safety points before you start.

  • Do not keep running a dryer whose motor sounds active while the drum remains stationary; stalled or abnormal drive operation can overheat components.
  • Disconnect electrical power before any manual drum check, and do not open or move gas connections on a gas dryer as part of routine troubleshooting.
  • Stop using the dryer if there is a burning odor, repeated breaker trip, seized drum, damaged cord, or harsh mechanical noise and arrange qualified service.

First confirm that the drum is actually staying still

Start with the dryer empty or with only a very small test load after the machine has cooled. Close the door normally and start the shortest appropriate cycle. Watch or listen for the first few seconds only. If you hear the motor or blower but the drum does not move, stop the cycle rather than letting the motor keep trying against a failed drive system.

Whirlpool lists a worn or broken drive belt among common reasons a dryer motor can run while the drum does not rotate. A seized drum, failed roller or bearing, idler problem, or motor fault can create a similar no-spin condition, so the sound alone does not identify the exact part.

An unusually free drum can point toward a drive belt, but it is not a complete diagnosis

The belt wraps around the drum and transfers motor power through the idler and drive pulley. If that belt breaks, the drum may feel much easier to turn by hand than normal because the drive system is no longer applying the usual resistance. Some dryers also use a belt switch that prevents the motor from running after a belt failure, so model behavior varies.

A drum that is hard to rotate, stops at one point, or produces scraping or grinding may instead have a foreign object, damaged roller, bearing, felt seal, or other mechanical problem. Do not force a stuck drum because forcing it can damage supports or trap an object more deeply.

Opening the cabinet changes the safety level of the repair

Replacing a dryer belt often requires removing panels, working around sharp sheet-metal edges, releasing spring-loaded belt tension, and routing the belt correctly around the motor and idler. On gas dryers, the cabinet also sits around fuel-burning equipment and a gas connection. A generic belt-routing diagram is not enough; use the exact model service or installation information if the manufacturer makes homeowner replacement appropriate.

If you are not comfortable verifying zero electrical power, supporting the drum, or identifying the correct belt path, use appliance service. Do not disconnect or move a gas supply connection as part of a casual belt check. Renters should report a no-spin dryer rather than opening a landlord-owned appliance.

Replacement parts need exact model compatibility

If service confirms a failed belt, idler, roller, or drum support, order the part by the dryer model number rather than by width or appearance alone. Belt length, rib count, tension, pulley design, drum support, and cabinet disassembly vary across product families.

A dryer that repeatedly trips a breaker, smells hot or burnt, has a seized drum, makes harsh metal-on-metal noise, or will not stop when controls are used needs more than a belt guess. Keep it off until the electrical or mechanical fault is identified.

Before you call it done

  • The dryer was tested only briefly and repeated motor-running/no-drum starts were avoided.
  • An overloaded load, trapped clothing, door issue, and control setting were ruled out first.
  • Power was disconnected before the empty drum was rotated by hand.
  • A free or stuck drum was treated as a clue rather than proof of one failed part.
  • Belt, roller, idler, motor, gas, or internal electrical work is being matched to the exact model and handled at the appropriate service level.
