Dishwasher Making a Grinding Noise? Check the Filter Area Before You Assume the Pump Is Bad

A new grinding or crunching sound can come from debris near the filter, an item touching a spray arm, or a pump problem. Pin down when the noise happens and inspect only the owner-accessible areas before scheduling service.

A dishwasher can hum, swish, click, and drain normally, so the word “grinding” matters less than when the sound starts and whether cleaning performance changed with it. If the noise is new, harsh, or paired with poor washing or draining, stop guessing at the motor and begin with the filter, spray-arm clearance, and the exact point in the cycle when the sound appears.

Start by matching the noise to the part of the cycle

A brief hum while draining, rushing water during fill and wash, and periodic clicks can be normal. A scraping or grinding sound that appears only while the spray arms are washing points you toward rack loading, spray-arm contact, the filter area, or the circulation path. A sound that appears only when the machine drains points more toward the drain-pump area.

Run no repeated test cycles if the sound is severe, metallic, or accompanied by leaking, a burning smell, a tripped breaker, or a dishwasher that stops mid-cycle. Those symptoms move the problem beyond a simple loading or filter check.

Wear cut-resistant gloves if broken glass is possible, and never sweep blindly with your fingers around a sump opening. Use a flashlight and tongs for a visible loose object only when the dishwasher is off. Do not remove pump covers, impellers, wiring shields, or fasteners just to chase a noise.

A spray arm can sound much worse than the actual problem

A spoon handle, cutting board, oversized plate, or pan can hang below a rack and repeatedly clip a rotating spray arm. The resulting thump, scrape, or rhythmic grind often appears after a different loading pattern rather than after an appliance failure.

With the dishwasher off, gently rotate each owner-accessible spray arm by hand. It should move without striking dishes or rack hardware. If it rubs even when the machine is empty, compare the arm seating and rack position with the owner manual rather than bending the arm.

Know when the pump becomes the more likely explanation

If the filter is clean, nothing contacts the spray arms, and a harsh grinding sound returns at the same point of every cycle, an internal circulation pump, drain pump, impeller, bearing, or foreign object below the owner-accessible filter area becomes more plausible. Poor cleaning, failure to drain, an error code, or a new leak strengthens the case for service.

Do not order a pump from the sound alone. Dishwasher families can use different pump assemblies, seals, and electrical connectors even when the exterior looks identical. Record the model number, the exact cycle phase, any error code, and whether the tub drains normally before contacting service.

If you need a replacement part, match the model rather than the symptom

Routine parts such as filters or spray arms should match the exact dishwasher model and revision. Check the manufacturer parts diagram for the correct filter style, arm attachment, and replacement procedure. A generic part that physically fits can still change spray coverage, sealing, or clearance.

Pump replacement is a different category of work because it can involve water connections, seals, line voltage, sharp sheet metal, and leak testing. If the diagnosis has reached an internal pump or wiring fault, appliance service is usually the safer next step.

Before you call it done

  • The noise was matched to wash, drain, or both instead of being labeled only as “grinding.”
  • Rack loading and spray-arm clearance were checked with the dishwasher off.
  • Only the owner-accessible filter area was inspected for foreign objects.
