Cold Air Coming Under an Exterior Door? Fix the Gap Without Making the Door Hard to Close

A winter draft at an exterior door can come from a worn sweep, compressed weatherstripping, an adjustable threshold, loose hinges, or a door that no longer sits square. Find the actual gap before stacking seals that make the latch difficult to use.

If you can feel cold air at your feet every time the wind picks up, the temptation is to stick another foam strip anywhere the door looks bright. That can make the latch bind while leaving the real gap untouched. Exterior doors need to seal and still operate smoothly, so first locate whether the leak is at the bottom, hinge side, latch side, top, or around the fixed frame.

Check these safety points before you start.

  • Do not create a seal so tight that an exterior door cannot latch, lock, or open easily in an emergency.
  • Do not drill into thresholds, exterior trim, or rental-property doors without confirming what is behind the surface and obtaining required permission.
  • If the gap is associated with rot, water entry, a loose frame, or structural movement, stop adding weatherstripping and have the door assembly inspected.

Map the leak with the door closed before buying weatherstripping

On a cold or windy day, move your hand slowly around the perimeter of the closed door and look for visible daylight. Pay attention to the bottom corners, where a sweep, threshold, and side weatherstripping meet. A gap only at one corner can be an alignment issue, while a uniform gap along the bottom more often points to the sweep or threshold.

Check whether the door latches without lifting, pushing, or slamming it. Loose hinge screws, a sagging slab, or a shifted strike can change the seal. The U.S. Department of Energy’s weatherization guidance treats weatherstripping as the seal for movable joints and emphasizes maintaining proper door operation rather than simply adding thickness.

A door sweep and a threshold solve different parts of the bottom gap

Some thresholds have an adjustable center strip; others are not designed to move. If the sweep is intact but barely misses an adjustable threshold, the model-specific adjustment may restore contact without replacing the sweep.

If the sweep is torn or hardened, measure the door thickness, width, mounting style, and available clearance before buying a replacement. A sweep that drags heavily can make a door difficult to latch, damage flooring, or pull away from its fasteners. DOE installation guidance specifically calls for weatherstripping and sweeps to reduce air infiltration without impeding door operation.

Side and top leaks need compressible weatherstripping sized for the gap

Weatherstripping should compress enough to seal when the door closes but not so much that the latch requires extra force. Match the profile to the existing kerf, adhesive channel, or stop instead of stacking several unrelated foam tapes. For adhesive products, clean and dry the mounting surface and install within the temperature range listed by the manufacturer.

If the leak is between the fixed door frame and the wall rather than between the door and frame, that is an air-sealing job, not a thicker door gasket. Caulk may be appropriate for small stationary cracks, while larger concealed gaps can require trim removal and a more deliberate air-sealing method.

Renters can make reversible fixes, but should report alignment and water problems

A removable draft stopper or landlord-approved adhesive weatherstrip can be a low-risk temporary measure in a rental. Do not plane the door, drill a new threshold, change the strike, or remove exterior trim without permission. Photograph visible daylight, frost, or water entry so the property manager can see that the problem is more than comfort alone.

Call for repair if the door is badly warped, the frame is loose, the threshold is rotted, daylight follows a large structural gap, water enters during rain, or the door no longer locks reliably. Weatherstripping should not be used to disguise a security, rot, or flashing problem.

  • The draft location was identified at the bottom, sides, top, or fixed frame before new material was installed.
  • The door latches and locks normally without needing to be lifted, slammed, or forced.
  • The sweep and threshold were checked as separate parts and adjusted only if their design allows it.
  • New weatherstripping compresses enough to seal without making the door hard to operate.
  • Water intrusion, rot, a loose frame, or a security problem is being treated as a repair issue rather than covered with foam tape.
