A central air conditioner removes moisture from indoor air and is supposed to send that condensate to a drain. Water on the floor around a basement air handler—or a ceiling stain below an attic unit—means that drainage path, coil condition, or pan deserves immediate attention. The first priority is protecting the building, not keeping the thermostat at the same setting while you wait to see whether the puddle stops.

If water is actively spreading, stop cooling and protect the building first
Turn the thermostat from cooling to Off if water is overflowing from the indoor unit, secondary pan, or ceiling below it. If water is near exposed wiring, an electrical panel, receptacle, or a visibly wet HVAC control compartment, stay clear and switch off the HVAC circuit only if you can do so safely from the normal breaker handle. Do not open wet electrical panels to investigate.
Move belongings away, catch drips only where doing so is safe, and dry accessible flooring and surfaces. EPA moisture guidance emphasizes fixing the water source and drying damp materials within roughly 24 to 48 hours when possible to reduce mold risk. An attic-unit leak that is staining a ceiling deserves urgent attention even if the AC still cools.

If the unit has a clear or accessible drain section, look for standing water, algae-like buildup, or an exterior drain termination that is not flowing during humid cooling operation. Some systems have a float switch that shuts cooling down when the drain backs up. Do not bypass that switch just to restart the AC; it may be preventing overflow damage.
Weak airflow and a frozen coil can turn into a water leak later
A very dirty return filter, closed or blocked airflow path, blower problem, low refrigerant charge, or other fault can allow the evaporator coil to freeze. When the ice melts, the normal drain system may be overwhelmed or water may appear outside the intended pan. If you see ice, turning the thermostat colder will not solve the cause.
Replace only a user-serviceable dirty filter and make sure normal supply and return openings are not blocked. Refrigerant pressure, blower electrical diagnosis, coil access, and internal airflow measurement belong to HVAC service. Do not chip ice from a coil or use heat guns, hair dryers, or sharp tools on refrigerant tubing.
Clean a drain only through a service point that is meant to be used
Some central AC systems provide an accessible condensate cleanout and an exterior drain termination that can be cleared with a wet/dry vacuum or the maintenance method specified by the equipment or installer. Carrier describes these as possible approaches, but drain layouts vary and may include traps, pumps, shared plumbing, or secondary lines.
Do not pour bleach, drain opener, or mixed chemicals into an HVAC drain unless the equipment instructions specifically allow the product and method. Chemical residue can damage materials or create hazardous fumes when products are mixed. If the drain is concealed, repeatedly backs up, or uses a failed condensate pump, service is the safer path.
Attic units and finished spaces need a damage check after the HVAC is fixed
After drainage is restored, inspect the secondary pan, nearby insulation, ceiling below, flooring, baseboards, and wall surfaces for lingering moisture. A repaired AC drain does not automatically dry wet drywall or insulation. Use fans or dehumidification only where electrical conditions are safe, and replace materials that cannot be adequately dried when necessary.
Renters should photograph the leak and affected finishes and notify property management promptly rather than cutting into ceilings or servicing a shared HVAC system. Homeowners can ask an HVAC technician to verify primary drainage, secondary pan and drain, float-switch operation, condensate pump if present, filter and airflow, and the reason the water escaped before cooling is returned to normal operation.
