A few beads of water on an AC register during a humid spell and a ceiling stain that keeps growing are not the same problem. Cold supply air can chill the metal register below the surrounding air’s dew point, but persistent sweating often means the humidity, duct insulation, air leakage, or HVAC operating condition needs attention. Treat the moisture source first so the stain does not simply come back.

Check these safety points before you start.

- If ceiling materials are saturated, sagging, or near electrical fixtures, keep people clear of the area until the leak and structural/electrical risk are assessed.
First decide whether the water is forming on the register or arriving through the duct
Wipe the register and surrounding ceiling or wall dry, then observe it while the AC runs. Fine droplets forming evenly on the cold metal point toward surface condensation. Water that appears from inside the duct, leaves a concentrated trail, or keeps dripping after cooling stops may involve a different HVAC or building leak.
Trane lists condensation on AC vents and sweating exposed ductwork among signs of excessive HVAC condensation. That makes the location of the first wet spot useful diagnostic information.

High indoor humidity gives cold metal more moisture to condense
During humid weather, especially in basements, coastal climates, or homes with frequent outdoor-air entry, the air around a supply register may carry enough moisture to condense on the chilled metal. Long cooling cycles can help dehumidify, while oversized or short-cycling equipment may satisfy temperature before removing as much moisture.
Do not solve the symptom by insulating over wet materials or turning the thermostat dramatically colder. A colder register can increase condensation if the indoor moisture level remains high.
The duct boot and nearby insulation deserve attention
Lennox and Trane both describe poor duct insulation as a contributor to sweating ducts or vents. A metal boot running through a hot attic, crawlspace, garage ceiling, or other unconditioned area can stay much colder than the surrounding humid air. Missing or compressed insulation around the boot can make condensation concentrate at the register.
Duct air leakage can also draw humid attic or crawlspace air toward cold surfaces. Sealing and insulation work should use HVAC-compatible materials and preserve access to the register and any required fire or building assemblies.
Check for signs that the AC itself has a larger moisture problem
A dirty filter or blocked return can reduce airflow and contribute to evaporator-coil icing. Carrier and Trane both identify restricted airflow as a common frozen-coil cause. When ice later melts, water can show up near the air handler or, in some cases, farther along the distribution system.
If you see ice on refrigerant lines or the indoor coil area, weak airflow, water near the air handler, a full drain pan, a float-switch shutdown, or poor cooling, turn cooling off and arrange HVAC service. Refrigerant testing, coil access, and internal condensate repairs are not room-side register maintenance.
Dry the building material after the source is fixed
Repeated condensation can discolor drywall, soften joint compound, swell trim, or support mold growth. Once the moisture source is corrected, dry affected materials promptly and verify that the area stays dry through several cooling cycles before priming or repainting.
If insulation inside a ceiling cavity is wet, the stain is expanding, or there is visible microbial growth over a meaningful area, the job may need both HVAC correction and building-material remediation rather than a new coat of paint.

- You know whether droplets form on the register surface or water is arriving from inside the duct.
- Indoor humidity, the HVAC filter, and return-air obstructions were checked before changing thermostat settings.
- The register boot and nearby duct insulation are being considered, especially where ducts pass through an attic, crawlspace, or garage.
