A few drops from a bathroom exhaust fan can look exactly like a roof leak from below. In cold weather, though, warm humid shower air can condense inside a cold exhaust duct and run back toward the fan if the duct is uninsulated or poorly pitched. Broan-NuTone's current support guidance specifically identifies duct condensation and exterior wall/roof-vent sealing as the two main directions to check. The timing of the drip is your first clue.

Check these safety points before you start.
- If water is entering the fan's electrical housing or wiring, stop using the fan and have the circuit and equipment inspected safely.
- Do not walk between attic joists, disturb wet electrical equipment, or climb onto a wet, icy, or steep roof to trace the leak.
- Do not vent a bathroom fan into an attic, soffit cavity, or other interior space; the exhaust path should terminate outdoors according to the fan instructions and applicable code.
Use timing to separate shower condensation from rain entry
Write down when the drip appears. Water that shows up after a long hot shower on a cold day points more strongly toward condensation inside the exhaust path. Water that appears during wind-driven rain or snowmelt, even when the bathroom has not been used, makes the exterior cap, flashing, or nearby roof/wall penetration more suspicious.
A stained grille alone cannot tell you which source is correct. Dry the visible surfaces, then observe the next few shower and weather events rather than assuming the first explanation.

Cold ductwork can turn humid exhaust air back into liquid water
Broan-NuTone says water dripping from a fan grille is often condensation caused by cold ductwork or improper duct installation. In an unconditioned attic, a bare metal duct can become cold enough for bathroom moisture to condense on the inside surface.
Insulated ductwork reduces that temperature difference. The manufacturer also recommends duct routing that allows condensation to move toward the exterior rather than back toward the fan. Correct slope and insulation are installation details, not something to improvise by stuffing loose insulation into a fan housing.
Long, crushed, or sharply bent duct runs hold moisture and reduce airflow
A bathroom fan only removes moisture as well as the duct allows. Too many turns, a sagging flexible duct, a blocked exterior flap, or an undersized run can slow airflow and create low spots where condensed water collects.
If the attic or crawlspace is safely accessible from a proper walkway, you may be able to visually identify disconnected or badly sagging duct without disturbing insulation. Do not step between ceiling joists, compress loose-fill insulation, or work around wet electrical equipment just to trace a duct.
An exterior cap or flashing leak behaves differently from duct condensation
Broan-NuTone also lists a sealing problem at the wall or roof vent as another source of water at the fan. A cracked cap, failed flashing, damaged roof covering, or wind-driven rain can send water along the duct or housing and into the ceiling opening.
Roof diagnosis is not a ladder test during rain. If the pattern follows storms, have the exterior termination and nearby flashing inspected safely, especially on steep roofs, multi-story homes, or rental properties where exterior work is the owner's responsibility.
Dry the ceiling cavity before a small drip becomes a larger moisture problem
Repeated wetting can damage drywall, insulation, wood, and paint even when the volume seems small. Once the source is corrected, affected materials need to dry rather than being immediately sealed under stain-blocking primer.
Stop using the fan and shut off the appropriate circuit if water is entering the electrical housing, light kit, switch, or wiring. Water and energized equipment turn an ordinary condensation problem into an electrical-safety issue that needs qualified service.

- Shower timing and weather timing were compared before labeling the problem a roof leak.
